How do I make an email accessible?

  • Make your text easy to read. Avoid decorative fonts, left-align your text, and use a minimum of 12pt (or larger) font size. Consider using Berkeley Brand fonts

  • Check your color. Make sure your text color and background color meet color contrast requirementsand don’t rely on color alone to convey meaning. Berkeley Brand lists approved color combinations that meet accessibility standards.

  • Add alt text or a description to images. If you add text to your graphic, be sure the same information is available in your email.

  • Structure your listsUse proper bulleted or numbered lists in your email. This makes it easier for folks using assistive tech to navigate.

  • Add descriptive links. Use meaningful link text that explains where a link takes users. Don’t use links that say “here” or “more”, or full URLs.
