Live Captioning FAQ

If you have received an accommodation request for your event, please visit the Disability Access and Compliance Live Captioning Checklist for Remote Events help guide.

If you have NOT received an accommodation request for your event, please see below for captioning requirements.

What is the difference between live captions and captions for pre-recorded video?

Live captions are captions that are written in real time. Because they are written in real time, they might not be fully accurate—mistakes happen.

Captions for pre-recorded video are written after the recording has been made. It is required that captions are accurate for pre-recorded content.

Are captions required for all live-streamed events at Berkeley?

Yes, live captions are required for all livestreamed events at Berkeley. Live captions are required even if an accommodation request has not been made prior to the event.

If an accommodation request has been made for your event, please visit the Disability Access and Compliance Live Captioning Checklist for Remote Events help guide.

Can I use auto-captions (like Zoom) for live-streamed events?

If you have not received an accommodation request: Yes, auto-captions can be used for live-streamed events. This includes Zoom’s automated caption feature. Please note that live captions are not accurate enough to meet compliance requirements for pre-recorded content.

If you plan to film an event and share a recording of it later, the video needs to have accurate captions prior to publishing it to the video player platform (like YouTube).

If you have received an accommodation request: No, auto-captions cannot be used for live-stream events. Please see Communications Accommodations (CART/ASL) for next steps.
