Preexisting digital documents

All digital content created after April 26, 2027 must meet WCAG 2.1 AA.

What is a 'preexisting digital document'?

A ‘preexisting digital document’ is a PDF, spreadsheet, or word processing document that:

  1. Was made available on your website before April 26, 2027 AND
  2. It is only kept for research, reference, or recordkeeping.

Any digital documents people use to apply for, gain access to, or take part in your services, programs, or activities must meet WCAG 2.1 AA by April 26, 2027.

Preexisting digital documents are not required to meet WCAG 2.1 AA and are not required to be archived. However, we strongly advise adding exempt, preexisting digital documents to your archive. This makes it easier for you, your team, and your users to know what documents meet WCAG 2.1 AA, and which do not.
