How do I make a Google Form accessible?

Google Forms are an easy tool for making surveys, quizzes, and forms. It has accessibility features to help everyone use it, including people with assistive technology.

Setting up your Google Form

  • Stick to the Google Themes for your color and font choices If you do customize these, make sure you have enough color contrast between your text and background.
  • Give your form a descriptive title and add a description. Make it clear to users what your form is for and how the information will be used.
  • Keep header images simple and decorative. Avoid the moving header images or images with text.

Setting up your questions

  • Ask clear questions. Make it easy for users to give you the information you need. Add a description to your question if you need to add more context.

  • Use examples for how you want information added. For example, if you want an email address, add ‘example@berkeley.edu’ to your question.

  • Avoid making questions ‘required’. Save these for when it is absolutely necessary. This makes it easier for people to successfully complete your form.

  • Add an ‘image caption’ if you add images. Tell users what is in the image, but keep it brief.

Best Practices

  • Use Plain Language. Define acronyms. Use an active voice. Make it easier for everyone to understand and use your form.

  • Toggle on the ‘Show progress bar’ feature in Settings. This is really helpful for forms that are long or have a lot of questions.

  • Add structure to longer forms. Group similar questions together and block questions in ‘sections’.

  • Add your contact information to your form description. Give users a way to reach out if they have questions.
