Live Captioning FAQ

If you HAVE received an accommodation request for your event, please review the Live Captioning Checklist for Remote Events guide.

If you have NOT received an accommodation request for your event, please review this guide for captioning requirements.

What is the difference between live captions and pre-recorded captions?

Live captions are captions written in real time for a live event. Captions written in real time might not be fully accurate—mistakes happen.

Pre-recorded captions are captions written for a recorded video. You must include accurate captions for all pre-recorded videos before you share them.

Are captions required for all livestreamed events at Berkeley?

Yes, all livestreamed events at Berkeley must include live captions. You must include live captions even if an attendee has not requested accommodations before an event.

If an attendee has made an accommodation request for your event, please review the Live Captioning Checklist for Remove Events guide.

Can I use auto-captions for livestreamed events?

If you HAVE received an accommodation request: No, you can't use auto-captions for livestreamed events. Please see Communications Accommodations (CART/ASL) for next steps.

If you have NOT received an accommodation request: Yes, you can use auto-captions for your livestreamed events. This includes Zoom’s automated caption feature.

Can I use the same captions for both my livestreamed event and my recorded video?

Live captions and auto-captions are not accurate enough for recorded videos. If you plan to film an event and share the recording later, you will need to edit the captions for accuracy before posting.
